Ryan, who by 1993 had already starred in Top Gun, Promised Land and When Harry Met Sally, continued her successful career with films like French Kiss, You’ve Got Mail and Kate & Leopold.
She made her directorial debut with Ithaca, in which she also starred.
Despite being one of the most popular Hollywood leading ladies in the ’90s, you will rarely see the 61-year-old on the screen now.
She hasn’t starred in a major film since 2008 and has previously admitted a return to acting full-time isn’t on the cards.
“I have so much admiration for actors who have incredible imagination for life or have life experience that they can then bring to the audience,” she told Vanity Fair in 2020.
“I don’t think I was one of those people. I felt like an unformed person.”
Ryan also hypothesised she wouldn’t have been so enchanted by acting if she started her career in the age of social media.
“If I started my career today, I wouldn’t have a chance,” she also told Vanity Fair.
“Social media has changed things. It’s so vast and big. I couldn’t handle the constant attention and judging.”
