Gabriel Basso plays Peter Sutherland on Netflix’s “The Night Agent,” and if you’ve been wondering where you’ve seen him before, you’re not alone. On the show, which premiered on March 23, the 28-year-old star plays a demoted FBI agent who gets wrapped up in a much larger conspiracy, but the series is far from his first project. He’s had a number of high-profile roles over the years, including a stint on one particularly popular Nickelodeon show.
Way back in the era of flip phones and the Twilight movies, Basso played Freddie Benson’s (Nathan Kress) doppelgänger on “iCarly.” In a 2008 episode of the show’s second season called “iLook Alike,” Basso played a look-alike hired by Carly (Miranda Cosgrove), Sam (Jennette McCurdy), and Freddie to trick Carly’s brother Spencer (Jerry Trainor) into thinking they were at home while they snuck out to a wrestling match.
Basso went on to star in the coming-of-age film “The Kings of Summer” and the Showtime series “The Big C.” His breakout role was in J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg’s “Super 8,” and from there, he landed the main role as J.D. Vance alongside Glenn Close and Amy Adams in “Hillbilly Elegy.”
Apparently the transition from being a child star to a fully fledged adult actor wasn’t the smoothest for Basso, partly because he was left feeling like he hadn’t actually experienced much of life despite his many onscreen roles. “That’s a big emptiness a lot of people who are child actors who remain in this business face,” he told People of the process of growing up after being a child star. “[It’s] looking at all these preconceived ideas that people have about them, that they’re badass and they can fight if they’re an action star — and they’ve never been in a fight before.” All that led him to take a break from the industry for a while, though “Hillbilly Elegy” marked his return to the screen.
For “The Night Agent,” Basso put himself through an intense workout routine to prepare for the role — and his physical transformation has inspired a number of TikToks by awed fans. Fortunately, there’s more where that came from, because the show has been renewed for a second season.
Ahead, check out Basso’s evolution from a Freddie Benson doppelgänger to a full-on action hero and heartthrob.
